Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is practised in two main formats: Gi and No-Gi. While the traditional Gi has been a staple for decades, No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is quickly gaining momentum, with more athletes and competitions embracing this dynamic style. Tournaments like the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) have helped showcase its fast-paced, explosive nature.
So why are so many practitioners shifting towards No-Gi? Let’s explore what makes each style unique — and why training in both will make you a more complete martial artist.
The Difference Between Gi and No-Gi
Gi Jiu-Jitsu uses the traditional uniform (the kimono), allowing grips on sleeves, collars, and pants to control your opponent. This creates a methodical, highly technical form of grappling focused on leverage and grip control.
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, is practised without the kimono. Athletes wear rash guards and shorts, relying more on wrestling techniques, body control, and movement. It’s faster, more fluid, and ideal for developing athleticism and adaptability.
Why Train Both?
Gi training builds patience, precision, and deep technical understanding.
No-Gi training develops speed, agility, and adaptability — skills that translate perfectly into MMA or real-world scenarios.
Training both gives you the best of both worlds, sharpening your technique while expanding your skill set.
